Genuine Stone Selections- Each manufacturer offers their own selection of genuine stones.  The quality offered and pricing varies between manufacturers. Some manufacturers offer traditional birthstones while others offer their own selection of genuine stones so it's very important that you read the Production Information Page for each item you are considering.  Each collection is different and has it's own product information section.

Take time to read all information provided on the product page when you order and also view the all important stone placement chart for your particular item. It is important that you do not rush through the order process because these items are custom made to your specifications and are not returnable and they are not cancelable once in production.

How do I find pricing on custom made mother's jewelry?

Pricing is provided in the option boxes shown on each individual product
pages.  Just click on these dropdown  boxes to view our pricing.

How Items Are Calculated-

Some items have one standard price for each karat quality and either genuine or simulated stones.  Others have a base price depending upon the total number of stones and metal quality selected which includes all simulated stones however if genuine stones are selected, each genuine stone is added to the base price.  To determine how pricing is calculated, click on the stone placement option boxes and see if additional pricing is indicated.  On some collections, larger ring sizes and white karat gold also add to the total price.

Please click here to view step by step pricing details.

Will my ring look just like the one in the picture?

Each piece of family jewelry is custom made to represent the individual uniqueness of your special family.  Each birth month is represented by either a genuine or simulated stone.  If you select the ring/pendant with simulated stones, with the same number of stones and the same months, in around a ring size 6 1/2 then, yes, it will look like the one in the picture. Otherwise, no.  MOST rings are pictured with simulated stones and rings do look different depending upon the number of stones and the birth months ordered.  Most are shown in approximate finger size 6 1/2 and all items are enlarged to show detail.  Be sure to view the stone placement diagram for the item you are considering to see how the stones are arranged.  Refer to millimeter sizes provided... we have provided "millimeters to inches" conversion charts for your convenience.

RING SIZE- I'm not sure which ring size to order...

It is often  best to have your finger sized by a professional jeweler especially if a ring with a wide shank is being considered (it covers more of the finger and tends to fit a bit tighter... usually by about 1/4 to 1/2 size but not guaranteed to be this difference). Any ring returned for resizing that is the size ordered will be charged for sizing and shipping. We offer a set of plastic sizers in full and half sizes from size 4 though 13 which (each plastic ring represents one size).  Our price is $4.50 and this includes shipping.  More affordable sheet finger sizers are also available.

For information or to order a set of these
plastic finger sizers, please visit the following address-

https://www.momsjewelrybox.com/orderform-sizers.html

Click here to order finger gauges.

Important: It is always best to ORDER a mothers ring is the correct ring size.  Some manufacturers  will not warrant an item that has been worked on by anyone other than themselves.  The manufacturer of one of the personalized ring collections only recommends that rings be resized by one size- up or down.  Treasure Rings cannot be resized at all!  Resizing can also be expensive especially in the case of The Original Mother's Ring® which has two bands... both bands must be resized and also re-soldered if it was ordered as a "pinch back" and shipping fees apply (see product information page for The Original Mother's Ring for important information for fit).  The Original Mother's Ring manufacturer will not resize this ring if it was crafted in all platinum.  We recommend that you have your finger sized by a local jeweler if ordering this ring with a gap or order the finger sizers above if ordering a pinchback.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION: If the ring you are considering is wider than 4mm or more all the way around, meaning both the top widest measurement AND the bottom shank, you must have your finger sized using wide finger gauges by a professional jeweler.  Rings that are say 9mm at the top widest measurement but taper down dramatically to about 3mm can be accurately sized using the finger sizers above.  It's bands that are wide all the way around that you need special wide finger gauges to determine the proper size because you may require a slightly larger size.

I'd like to see the design before I purchase.. do you have samples?

If you are not sure you will like a particular custom made item, we strongly recommend that you view a brass sample before you purchase because special order and custom made items are not returnable.  We have gold plated brass samples available for many, but not all, of our custom mother's products.  These are not for sale but may be ordered for viewing only and must be returned within 10 days of shipment.  Note that only one or two samples are available for each ring style so you cannot request samples with a specific number or color of stones.

Ratings- in our opinion.

See each individual collection's Product & Stone Information page for our personal opinion of that individual collection.

If I order 10k or 14k white gold, is it just yellow gold that has been plated to look white?

Absolutely not!  When given a choice of 10k, 14k or 18k "white" or "yellow" karat gold, the item will be cast that metal color/quality gold all the way through the piece.  Note that some manufacturer's do rhodium-plate their 14k white gold and sterling silver items for the whitest finish possible.

Why are mother's jewelry products "not returnable"?

Each mother's jewelry item is custom made just for you.  When you order a ring from us, we do not take a ring that someone else returned and resize it/reset stones.  Each ring is new from the manufacturer.  Our chances of ever selling a returned piece with the same gold quality, color of gold, ring size, type of stones, kind of stones, and placement of stones is nearly impossible.  So in order for us to offer lower prices, we do not accept returns. See below for information about if we make a mistake. NOTE: Product samples are available for many of our products... see a sample before you purchase if you are unsure.

Can I cancel my order after it has been placed?

In most cases the answer is no.  If your order has not yet been placed with the manufacturer, we will be happy to cancel the order for you.  If, however, the item has gone into production, we cannot cancel the order.  Many items are put into production very shortly after you place your order so order very carefully.

But what if there is something wrong with the custom item I ordered?

Items are guaranteed to be free of manufacturer defects and as ordered.

Product Guarantee- All items are guaranteed to be delivered free of manufacturer's defects.  If any item has a manufacturer's defect as determined by the manufacturer, it will be corrected by them at no charge to you.  We will even pay for your return insured REGULAR US MAIL shipping fee if it is determined to be a manufacturer's defect. NOTE however that loss of stones, broken prongs or any other damage caused by accident or abuse is not covered.  Click here for product care and stone loss and prong breakage note.  Many mfr. warranties are void if someone other that the manufacturer works on the item.

Manufacturer Defects or OUR Mistakes: If there is a manufacturer's defect or if we make a mistake and send the wrong size, stones, color of gold, spelling or stone placement we will, of course, have the manufacturer take care of the problem.  We have been in business for over 30 years and stand behind our products. We inspect each item prior to shipment and we do our best to catch any mfr. errors or defects before we ship. Some items are shipped to you directly from the manufacturer.  If there is a mistake on our part, you must telephone us within 15 days of delivery.  If it is our mistake, we will resize the ring not in the size ordered; reset stones when stones are not as ordered; have items remade if a misspelling is our mistake; and make any other corrections of our mistakes for free and will also reimburse you for the insured REGULAR US MAIL shipping fee.  If a different service or faster form of US Mail is used, you will be responsible for any amount over regular insured US Mail. Note that we do not reimburse fees for work done by someone else.  Corrections because of our error (stone placement, names, etc.) will not be free of charge after the above stated time period so inspect the item immediately upon delivery.

Customer Mistakes: Any ring returned for sizing that is the correct size ordered, for rearrangement or change in stones or for any other alteration or correction that was shipped as ordered it, will be charged accordingly and standard shipping fees will apply. We strongly encourage you to verify your order after you have placed the item in the shopping cart to make sure you have not made any mistakes.

When will my order arrive?

This generally depends upon two factors... the production time (the time it takes to make the item and ship from our store) indicated on the product page and the shipping method selected.

Production Time: Each product page states the length of time required to make/ship that particular custom piece.  This time varies from approximately 3 days up to 6-10 weeks so it is important that you read the product page before ordering.  This time frame will also be indicated on your emailed order confirmation.

Delivery Time- Time in the Shipping Company's Hands: Most custom made mothers jewelry items ship free via insured US Priority Mail- signature required... look for our free shipping symbol.  Some items do not ship free.

Delivery Methods of Items Shipping From Our Traverse City, Michigan Store...
Note that some items ship directly from the manufacturer via FedEx or UPS.  Read individual product pages.

US Priority Mail- signature generally takes 3-5 days for delivery but is not guaranteed to arrive in that time frame.
US Express Mail- signature required is a 1-2 day guaranteed delivery service... if delivery is not attempted in this time frame, your shipping fee is refunded.

IMPORTANT: Upgrading your shipping method to Express Mail will only speed up the actual delivery service time. If an item says it takes from 7-14 days to ship from our store, it will still take 7-14 days to ship if the Express delivery upgrade is selected however it will take 1-2 days for delivery instead of about 3-5 days.

How should I properly care for my new piece of jewelry?

If you treat your new jewelry with extra care, it will give you years of enjoyment. It is not meant to be worn when doing any work where you might hit it and cause damage.  It is important that during everyday wear if you should hit your hand/ring/jewelry on something, that the prongs and stones be carefully inspected immediately for any damage.  You do not have to be doing heavy work to damage a piece of jewelry... simply hitting a ring accidentally on the edge of a table/counter/file cabinet/etc. or hooking a prong on something can break off prongs or chip or shatter stones. It is common to cause damage and not even remember when you did it because we constantly use our hands. As with all jewelry, but especially rings, over time the prongs will wear down and will require retipping (when a piece requires retipping will depend upon how often it is worn) so it is important to have your new jewelry inspected periodically by a professional jeweler. We recommend inspection at least every 3-12 months depending upon how often the item is worn. Generally, opals require a bit more care because they are a softer stone... to prevent cracking, do not subject opals to rough handling or sudden temperature changes.  Use a jewelry cleaner periodically that is made specifically for the type of metal and the kind of stones set in the piece or have the item cleaned by a professional jeweler. Remove your jewelry before using any harsh cleaners or products.

For an outside list of several varieties of genuine stones and their general care information, please visit one of our manufacturer's websites at https://www.stuller.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10621

Stone Loss & Prong Breakage Note: Prongs generally do not just fall off and stones usually don't just chip, break or fall out. In other words, it usually takes some action on the part of the person wearing the jewelry to cause this damage.  Items are carefully inspected prior to shipment.  The usual reason for loss or damage is hitting or snagging a prong on something which causes the prong to break off or be pulled away from the stone or the stone itself is hit and broken or shattered. (Also see below for karat gold's reaction to chlorine/bleach.) This damage is not a manufacturer's defect and standard repair and shipping charges apply.  One manufacturer's defect that can cause prongs to simply fall off shortly after purchase is porosity caused during the manufacturing process... the setting is returned to the mfr. for testing to determine this is the cause. When porosity during the manufacturing process is the cause, the ring is scrapped and a new ring made at no charge.  This has happened to our products only twice over the past 12 years.

Important Notice About Gold Jewelry & Chlorine:

Chlorine and products that contain chlorine are one of your gold jewelry’s worst enemies. Over time it will weaken the gold structure resulting in broken prongs, links, etc. When enjoying swimming pools or Jacuzzis or simply using cleaning products that contain chlorine or bleach, remember to remove your jewelry and store it in a safe place.

Tell me about sterling silver. Does it tarnish?

Sterling silver is just over 92% pure silver mixed with a copper alloy.  As a jewelry piece ages and is exposed to the air it usually develops a rich pitana.  Some sterling silver items are rhodium-plated by manufacturers to prevent tarnishing... until the plating has been worn off.   As the plating is worn away the piece may begin to tarnish.  You can take the item to your local jeweler and have it rhodium-plated again if you prefer the white color with less polishing.

Occasionally a customer will not wear sterling silver well- especially people with moist skin.  The moisture reacts with the copper alloy in sterling silver causing a green stain on the skin and/or a discoloration the sterling silver piece itself.  This is not a defect in the piece but a chemical reaction between the copper and moisture.  If this happens, the piece should be polished frequently and a non-abrasive powder applied on moist skin areas that are exposed to the jewelry.  You may also wish to check into having the piece rhodium-plated.

When  I wear a ring it leaves a black mark on my finger.  Have you ever heard of this?

Yes, it can happen on occasion. Here is one example...
A customer gets the new ring they've been dreaming of and they wear it everyday.  They notice a discoloration on their finger or on their clothes... often black in color and sometimes a smudge around their finger.  The first thing that often goes through their mind is that the gold is impure or the manufacturing process was faulty.  This is not the case.  What is often happening is the customer has come into contact with some type of abrasive.  A common culprit is simple cosmetics which can have ingredients that are actually harder than the gold itself.  As the jewelry comes into contact with the makeup and rubs on the skin, minute particles of gold are actually being worn off the jewelry leaving a black trail (yes, black... a jeweler's buff wheel turns black from polishing gold).  The remedy for this is to either switch cosmetics (yup!  must have been a guy who suggested it) or to put your jewelry on last after you've applied all of your makeup and washed your hands.

Another possible cause is actual corrosion of the metal.  Pure gold is too soft to use in the crafting of most jewelry so alloys are added making it more durable. Karat gold is made up of a percentage of pure gold along with usually silver or copper.  Moist skin can cause the alloys added to the gold to corrode...

"When you perspire, fats and fatty acids released can cause corrosion of karat gold, especially when exposed to warmth and air. This problem can be worse in seacoast and semitropical areas, where chlorides combine with perspiration to form a corrosive element that discolors skin. Smog fumes gradually attack jewelry and are evident as a tarnish that rubs off on the skin."

It is recommended that jewelry be removed and cleaned often and an absorbent powder that does not contain an abrasive be applied to the skin.
